#tinyefforts2021
In June 2020 I wrote the first set of tinyefforts pieces, #tinyefforts2020 as a way to figure out how to live with what my life had become in that moment. I wanted to open up small ways to stay in touch with my musical community, support people around me, elevate BIPOC artists, and try to do better in this world. The project felt like a way forward, even though it was stumbling in the dark. I'm immensely grateful for all the musicians I was able to connect with whom I would not have otherwise met -- and who bring real joy and beauty to the world -- because of this project. And, more importantly, I was happy to support a little bit of music making with the money I could offer.
Six months later, I've written four new pieces, a companion set to #tinyefforts2020 that are a snapshot of the end of this year: less hopeful than I would have wanted, in the mania of I-hope-this-email-finds-you-well, feeling small and powerless but also fortified and strong in the search for answers, and -- because it's now winter -- cold but knowing that spring is coming because it must.
Please download and perform these pieces however you like -- in whatever order, setting, medium, and instrumentation you prefer -- let's make music together, even as we're apart! I've included versions in treble clef, alto clef, and bass clef (all written pitch rather than sounding pitch!), with indications for octave transpositions if the range is too large, as well as vocalise/simplified versions of "Dark is a way." If an edit would make a passage more playable on your instrument, please let me know.
Most importantly, I want to support you as you make music, especially if you are a BIPOC artist! If you record any of these works (a single piece, multiple, in any order), let me know and I'll use funds leftover from #tinyefforts2020 + the new $2,000 stimulus check to send you $100 ($200 if you're a BIPOC artist) -- up to $3,100 total.
You can DM me, email me or @ me, and please tag your video on Twitter, Instagram, and/or Facebook with #tinyefforts2021.
